“The Dragon Mother” is my first handmade fashion design, created in a small room at home. I began this project as a way to reconnect with myself and to express the strength I found after years of hardship. The image of a woman rising again — like a dragon ascending from ashes — became my inspiration.
The costume consists of two main parts. The bodice, skirt, and sleeves are all cut and sewn from fabric. The inner skirt has a soft lining and two pleated black mesh layers, symbolizing the quiet and hidden parts of the soul — the darkness everyone must walk through. The outer cloak is made from twill fabric hand-painted with blended grey tones, representing resilience that has been tempered and softened by experience.
The collar, dragon scales on the bodice, and arm guards are crafted from EVA foam. I cut, glued, and shaped each tiny scale by hand, then painted them to create a subtle metallic texture. A small dragon brooch reminds me that even when the fire fades, a spark of courage still remains within.
I designed, cut, sewed, painted, and completed everything by myself over two months — guided only by patience and a quiet love for transforming simple fabrics into something meaningful.
The finished photographs reveal both sides of the work: the mannequin shots show the handmade craftsmanship, while the edited images with dragons express the dream behind it — the vision of a woman who is gentle yet powerful, real yet mythical.
To me, “The Dragon Mother” is more than just a costume. It is a small story of growth, healing, and rediscovery — proof that the act of creating beauty with one’s own hands can help us find light within ourselves, and share that light with the world.
